Background & Job Description

We are sharing multiple specialized consultant opportunities with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), a specialized UN agency leading international efforts to defeat hunger and achieve global food security. Tasks and Key Responsibilities

1. International Consultant – Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience

  • Provide technical support to country teams for developing and implementing climate adaptation strategies in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries
  • Design projects that enhance resilience of small-scale producers and rural communities against climate shocks
  • Draft technical reports, policy briefs, and knowledge products on climate-related topics
  • Liaise with national government counterparts, UN agencies, and implementation partners

2. Home-Based Consultant – GIS and Remote Sensing Specialist

  • Process and analyze satellite imagery and geospatial data to support agricultural and environmental projects
  • Develop and maintain geospatial databases related to land use, water resources, and agricultural monitoring
  • Create high-quality maps, visualizations, and technical reports for decision-making
  • Provide technical guidance and training to FAO staff on geospatial tools and methodologies

3. International Consultant – Social Protection and Rural Development

  • Provide technical support to governments for designing and evaluating social protection programs
  • Conduct socio-economic impact assessments of policies on rural communities
  • Facilitate stakeholder consultations and workshops with government agencies and civil society
  • Develop training materials and knowledge products to strengthen national social protection systems

4. Home-Based Consultant – Fisheries and Aquaculture Specialist

  • Provide technical advice on sustainable fisheries management and aquaculture practices
  • Conduct research and prepare technical reports on ecosystem management and fishing practices
  • Support implementation of FAO’s Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries
  • Contribute to international conferences and workshops on fisheries issues

5. International Consultant – Programme Development and Knowledge Management

  • Compile and synthesize best practices and lessons learned from completed projects
  • Design and implement knowledge management strategies and information sharing tools

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • All Positions: Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in relevant fields including Environmental Science, Geographic Information Systems, Social Sciences, Fisheries Science, International Development, or Natural Resource Management
  • Professional Certifications: Additional professional certifications in specialized areas (GIS, project management, etc.) are advantageous but not mandatory

Experience

  • Minimum Experience: 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in the relevant specialized field for most positions, with senior roles requiring 5+ years
  • Technical Expertise: Demonstrated expertise in the specific technical area (climate adaptation, GIS analysis, social protection programming, fisheries management, etc.)
  • International Experience: Previous work experience with international organizations, government agencies, or NGOs in development contexts is highly valued
  • Research Skills: Strong analytical and research capabilities with proven ability to produce technical reports and policy recommendations
  • Language Proficiency: Expert knowledge of English is essential for all positions; knowledge of other FAO official languages (French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian) is a significant advantage
