This Senior Program Officer position is a key role within the Earth for Life team, focusing on Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) initiatives and other large-scale, area-based conservation programs. These initiatives are designed to create sustainable, long-term funding mechanisms for conservation areas around the world. The position is preferably based in WWF’s Washington, DC office, but the organization may consider remote work arrangements for highly qualified candidates.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in developing financial models and conservation plans that ensure the long-term financial viability of protected areas, working with a diverse range of international partners and stakeholders. This position requires a unique blend of financial acumen, strategic planning skills, and a deep commitment to conservation.

Tasks and Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Modeling and Analysis: Develop detailed, long-term financial models for conservation initiatives, including projections of costs, funding needs, and mapping of costs to funding sources.
  • Initiative Design and Scoping: Collaborate with partner organizations to design and build consensus on initiative scope, conservation goals, activities, and key performance indicators.
  • Stakeholder Communication and Training: Communicate complex financial analyses to diverse audiences and train in-country partner organizations on financial modeling and related processes.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Clearly document conservation scope, financial needs, and underlying assumptions; contribute technical content to funding proposals and reports.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work as part of the Conservation Finance Community of Practice, collaborating with finance professionals across WWF on the development and implementation of priority initiatives.
  • Project Management: Manage multiple concurrent projects based in different countries, ensuring they remain on track and meet their objectives.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • A Master’s degree in a management, finance, or conservation-related field is strongly preferred.

Experience

  • A minimum of six years of professional experience in management consulting, business, finance, or conservation is required. A Master’s degree may substitute for two years of this experience.
  • Demonstrated financial modeling experience is essential.
  • Professional experience working in or with developing countries is required.
  • Proven ability to lead group discussions and train team members with a high degree of cultural sensitivity.
  • Experience working with teams spread across different time zones and managing projects under frequently changing circumstances.

Location and Compensation:

  • Salary Range: $84,800 – $106,000 per year
  • Travel Requirement: 15-25% international travel to developing countries, sometimes on short notice
