Role Overview

The Senior Director of Philanthropy is a key leadership position within CARE’s Major Gifts division, responsible for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding high-value donors capable of contributing $10,000 to $1,000,000+. Based in San Francisco (or Washington, DC), this role oversees fundraising strategy, donor engagement, and team management, ensuring sustainable revenue growth for CARE’s global programs.

Tasks & Responsibilities

Strategic Fundraising & Donor Management

  • Secure major gifts ($10K–$1M+) through one-on-one meetings, proposals, and events.
  • Meet or exceed annual and quarterly revenue targets.
  • Partner with the Executive Director of Philanthropy to refine best-in-class fundraising strategies.

Prospect Development & Pipeline Growth

  • Identify new major donor prospects through networking, research, and events.
  • Leverage donor-advised funds (DAFs), emergency appeals, and board connections to expand funding opportunities.
  • Utilize Salesforce CRM to track donor interactions, forecast revenue, and report progress.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Supervise a Director of Philanthropy, providing mentorship and performance oversight.
  • Work closely with marketing, programs, and executive teams to align fundraising with CARE’s mission.
  • Represent CARE at donor meetings, conferences, and high-profile events.

Qualifications

Education & Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Business, Communications, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) or similar credential is a plus.

Experience

  • Minimum 8 years in fundraising, major gifts, or nonprofit development.
  • Proven success in securing 6- and 7-figure donations.
  • Experience managing high-net-worth donor relationships.
  • 1+ years in international NGOs or large nonprofits (preferred).

Skills & Competencies

  • Exceptional communication (written and verbal) for proposals, presentations, and donor meetings.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking to optimize fundraising efforts.
  • Proficiency in Salesforce or similar donor management systems.
