Tasks and Responsibilities

Responsibilities will vary significantly by department and role level, but general functions for remote WHO staff may include:

  • Public Health & Epidemiology: Monitoring and tracking global disease outbreaks, analyzing complex health data sets, developing evidence-based guidelines and recommendations, and supporting member states in implementing health interventions.
  • Programme & Project Management: Designing, planning, and overseeing the implementation of international health initiatives; coordinating with partners and stakeholders across time zones; managing budgets and ensuring the timely delivery of project milestones and reports.
  • Communications & External Relations: Developing and executing global health communication campaigns; managing digital content and social media platforms for worldwide audiences; drafting press releases, speeches, and advocacy materials; and engaging with media and the public.
  • Information Technology & Data Management: Developing, maintaining, and securing critical IT infrastructure; building and managing digital health tools and applications; analyzing and visualizing global health data to inform decision-making.
  • Policy & Legal Affairs: Researching and drafting international health policies and regulations; providing legal interpretation of the International Health Regulations (IHR); advising on ethical guidelines and governance frameworks for global health issues.

Qualifications

WHO seeks highly motivated and qualified professionals from a wide range of disciplines who are committed to its public health mission.

Education and Certification

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s level or above) in a field relevant to the specific position is required. Common fields include Public Health, Medicine, Epidemiology, Communications, International Relations, Computer Science, Data Management, Law, or Social Sciences.
  • For some technical IT roles, proven certification and equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.

Experience

  • minimum of 2–7 years of progressive, relevant professional experience, depending on the grade level of the position (P2, P3, P4, etc.).
  • Proven experience working in an international context or on global issues is highly desirable.
  • Specific experience in the technical area of the job posting (e.g., outbreak response for epidemiologists, donor reporting for project managers, full-stack development for IT officers) is essential.
  • Prior experience working effectively in a remote or distributed team is a significant advantage.
