We are sharing a prestigious professional opportunity with the United Nations Development Coordination Office (DCO). The UN is strengthening its Resident Coordinator (RC) system to better support sustainable development goals globally. This Communications Officer position (P4 level) is located within the DCO Regional Team in Istanbul, Turkey, and plays a vital role in advancing the UN’s strategic communications across Europe, Central Asia, and the Arab States.
The Communications Officer will lead efforts to position the impact of the UN’s work on the ground—spearheaded by Resident Coordinators and UN Country Teams—across diverse regional and national contexts. This role involves close collaboration with RC offices, UN agencies, and the Department of Global Communications to deliver data-driven storytelling, crisis communication support, and media engagement. The position also contributes to the UN 2.0 transformation by integrating innovation, digital tools, and ethical AI into communications strategies.
Tasks and Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement regional communications strategies to raise awareness, drive engagement, and shape public perception of the UN’s work.
- Provide strategic advice on crisis communications, reputational risks, and misinformation threats, including drafting media lines and coordinating responses.
- Produce high-impact content such as op-eds, features, and multimedia materials to highlight UN results and regional priorities.
- Foster relationships with media outlets, plan press conferences, and facilitate inter-agency advocacy campaigns.
- Monitor traditional, social, and digital media to analyze public narratives and advise senior management on emerging issues.
- Support internal communications, staff engagement, and capacity-building initiatives, including guidance on data visualization and digital platforms.
- Represent the UN at public events and maintain partnerships with stakeholders to amplify advocacy messages.
Qualifications
Education and Certification
- An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Communications, Journalism, International Relations, or a related field.
- A first-level university degree combined with additional qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.
Experience
- A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in strategic communications, international relations, or public information.
- Demonstrated expertise in crisis communications, media relations, and digital storytelling.
- Experience in detecting and addressing misinformation, disinformation, and other threats to information integrity is desirable.
- Proficiency in data visualization tools, digital platform management, and analyzing large datasets is an advantage.
- Prior experience working in or with international organizations, particularly in fragile or post-conflict settings, is highly valued.
Additional Information
Duty Station and Contract
- This position is based in Istanbul, Turkey.
- This is a fixed-term appointment for an initial period of one year, with the possibility of extension subject to funding and mandate renewal.
